A fun and exciting new activity to TrailWorld, these amazing off road Segways are a high-tech two wheeled, self stabilising vehicle that are capable of turning within their own footprint, climbing hills and coping with off road terrain - they even feature the same gyroscope used in a Boeing 737 aircraft!
What is the format of the session? After a demonstration and safety briefing we get you signed in and kitted up in the appropriate safety equipment which includes body armour, helmet, knee and wrist protection. The training session starts with familiarisation - it is really quite odd when you first stand on the Segways foot-plate as you tend to try and balance yourself at the same time as the machine is trying to work out what you are doing! Once you have relaxed yourself, the software takes charge and you are ready to start negotiating the slalom circuit where we will have you turning ultra-tight around a laid out cone section. You lean forwards slightly to make the machine move in that direction, lean back to stop and slide the steering column from left to right to steer - superb fun once you get the hang of it! Once everyone is happy and has full control of the vehicle, and most importantly are able to stop when required, we move on to the off road circuit which features a variety of corners and even a hill climb with a tight left hand turn at the bottom! Throughout your session there will be an experienced instructor to guide and help you to get the most out of these crazy machines!
How long does the experience last? The Segway Rally experience lasts for 60 minutes including training, kitting up and briefings. What previous experience do I need to take part? None at all! We teach you the basics so as long as you are willing to listen to your instructors you should have no problem riding these hi-tech machines. Are there any restrictions? You must be aged 14 or over and in a good state of general health. How do I book and what is the availability? Gift vouchers for this experience are available at our online shop. You can book your experience directly with TrailWorld on 01582 842244 for weekday events. For weekend sessions please note that you will need to book directly with Segway on 0800 043 0889 (website: www.seghire.com) to fit in with their own experience day allocation.
Can I race and generally ride out of control Although this experience is not a 'full on' racing event, we do have 3 dedicated overtaking zones on the circuit where slower riders can pull over while the faster rider goes through. We feel this is the safest way of operating the Segways and avoids costly and potentially dangerous situations - wheel to wheel racing is not permitted (just think what would happen if you touched wheels!). We do expect customers to ride in a safe manner and not to ride faster than their own ability levels as this tends to lead to crashes! Sensible riders are safe riders. Damages There is really no reason why you should damage the Segways if you are riding within your skill level and have taken on-board the briefing and training session. However, we are aware that there may be the odd spill and will accept minor scratches. If you are riding erratically or have ignored the safety breifings and training session and subsequently crash the Segway then you will become liable for the damages. We most certainly do not want to try and make money from people who crash by charging them over the odds for repairs but on the other hand we do need to protect our equipment. Similar venues through Europe operate a £10 per drop policy regardless of any damage (you would get charged even if you simply drop the machine with no damage). We prefer not to impose this policy and expect participants to use common sense whilst riding - in this way nothing should get damaged. Crashes only really happen when the rider is either being stupid or riding beyond what they are capable of.
